Proverbs 18:21 – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”

Scripture: Proverbs 18:21 – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”
Introduction
Words are not just sounds. They are seeds. Every word you speak carries power—power to build up or power to tear down, power to heal or power to wound, power to release faith or power to feed fear.
When God wanted to create the world, He didn’t use His hands—
He used His voice.
He didn’t form light; He spoke it:
“Let there be… and there was.”
If the God who lives in us created everything by speaking, imagine what He expects of us. There is power in the spoken word.
I. The Spoken Word Creates Atmospheres
Scripture: Genesis 1:3
Every time God spoke, something happened.
He said “Let there be light,” and darkness had to yield.
Your words work the same way. The atmosphere of your home, your day, your relationships, your spiritual life—are shaped by the words you release.
-
If you speak fear, you create fear.
-
If you speak doubt, you invite doubt.
-
If you speak faith, you stir faith.
Some people are praying for a breakthrough while their mouth is closed.
Your words must match your prayers.
II. The Spoken Word Reveals the Heart
Scripture: Matthew 12:34 – “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Your mouth is the microphone of your heart.
Whatever fills your heart will eventually fill your speech.
You can’t speak victory when you meditate on defeat.
You can’t speak breakthrough while feeding on negativity.
You can’t speak faith when you abide in fear.
Want to change your words? Change your heart.
Want to change your heart? Change what you feed it.
Fill your heart with the Word of God so your mouth can release the will of God.
III. The Spoken Word Activates Faith
Scripture: Mark 11:23 – “Say unto this mountain…”
Jesus didn’t tell us to climb the mountain.
He didn’t tell us to go around the mountain.
He said “Speak to the mountain.”
Faith is not silent—faith speaks.
• The woman with the issue of blood said within herself,
“If I may touch Him, I shall be made whole.”
Her miracle started with a statement.
• David didn’t just run toward Goliath—he spoke to Goliath first!
“Today the Lord will deliver you into my hand.”
Before God moves your mountain, He wants you to move your mouth.
IV. The Spoken Word Has Consequences
Scripture: Proverbs 18:21
The Bible doesn’t say words have influence—
it says they have life and death.
Every day you are either:
-
Building your future or breaking it down
-
Blessing your family or burdening them
-
Speaking faith or speaking fear
-
Releasing healing or releasing hurt
Words don’t disappear—they take root.
Some people are reaping a harvest from words they forgot they spoke. Speak life intentionally, and watch life grow.
V. God Holds Us Accountable for Our Words
Scripture: Matthew 12:36 – “Every idle word…”
“Idle” words are empty, careless, unguarded words.
God says they matter.
Why?
Because your words reveal faith or the lack of it.
This is why we must:
-
Guard our tongue
-
Guard our confession
-
Guard our conversations
-
Guard what we speak over our children, our ministry, our finances, our health, and our destiny
Speak nothing that God has not ordained.
Conclusion: Speak Life
Your life moves in the direction of your declaration.
God has placed creative power in your tongue.
Speak what God said—not what you feel.
Speak what God promised—not what you fear.
Speak life until life shows up.
Speak victory until victory manifests.
Speak healing until healing flows.
Speak the Word until the Word becomes your reality.
Life and death are in your mouth. Choose life—by speaking life.
